Using your phone screen as a ring light: what it can and cannot do

Last updated 5 September 2026

A phone screen puts out light, so it can be used as a light. That is true, and it is also where most descriptions stop. Here is the honest version, including the parts that do not work.

What it does well

What it cannot do

The trade nobody mentions

Using the screen as a light means the screen is not fully available as a viewfinder. Every app solving this makes a compromise: a lit border around a smaller preview, or a full-screen light with no preview at all. A border keeps the preview usable and still forms a ring around your face, which is why most apps in this category land there.

So is it worth it

For a selfie, a video call, checking makeup in a dark hallway, or any photo where you want the same light every time: yes, easily, and it costs nothing because the hardware is already in your hand. For a proper photo shoot, a real lamp wins and it is not close. Both things are true at once.
