How to light your face for a video call without buying anything

Last updated 5 September 2026

You do not need a lamp to look normal on a call. You need the light to be in front of you rather than behind you, and roughly at eye level. Almost every bad video call breaks one of those two rules.

The single biggest mistake: a window behind you

A camera exposes for the brightest part of the frame. Sit with a window at your back and the camera darkens everything to protect that window, which means it darkens your face. You become a silhouette in front of a glowing rectangle. Turn ninety degrees so the window is to your side, or one hundred and eighty so it is in front of you, and the same camera suddenly shows a face.

Overhead light is the second problem

Ceiling lights come from above, which drops shadows into your eye sockets and under your nose. It is the lighting horror films use on purpose. If the room only has a ceiling light, add something in front of you at face height, even something small, and the shadows lift.

What you already own that works

Colour matters more than people expect

Mixing a warm bulb with cold daylight makes skin look patchy, one side orange and the other blue. Pick one temperature and stick to it. If you are using a screen as your light, warm it slightly rather than leaving it clinical white; faces look healthier under slightly warm light and washed out under pure white.

A thirty second setup

  1. Face the brightest part of the room.
  2. Put a light source at eye level, in front, not above.
  3. Kill the light directly behind you, or move.
  4. Check the preview before you join, not after.

That is it. No ring light purchase required, though the reason clip-on ring lights sell so well is that they solve exactly these three things at once.
